22. Planning a sequence of tests to identify organic compounds

  • de-ionised water

  • disposable gloves e.g. nitriles

  • test-tubes and stoppers

  • boiling-tubes

  • small beakers

  • test-tube racks

  • red and blue litmus or similar indicator papers

  • 2 mol dm-3 NaOH solution 

  • 1 mol dm-3 H2SO4 solution 

  • NaHCO3

  • 2,4-DNPH 

  • materials for preparing Tollen’s reagent

Hazard Risk Control measure

2 mol dm-3 NaOH solution – corrosive

Contact with skin and eyes.

Skin: drench with water.

Eye: flood with tap water (10min).

1 mol dm-3 H2SO4 solution – irritant.

Contact with skin and eyes

Skin: drench with water. Eye: flood with tap water (10min).

2,4-DNPH – flammable, moderate hazard to health.

Contact with skin and eyes.

Eyes: flood with tap water (20min). See
doctor.

Continue to flood the eye during the journey to see the doctor. 

0.1 mol dm-3 NH3 solution – no
hazard.

Contact with skin and eyes.

Skin: drench with plenty of water.


Eye: flood with tap water (10min).

0.1 mol dm-3 AgNO3 solution – irritant.

Contact with skin and eyes

Skin: wash off with water. Discard within 30min.

Eye: flood with tap water (10min). See doctor.

Skin: wash off with water. Eye: flood with tap water (10min). See doctor if pain persists

Sodium nitrate III, sodium nitrite (NaNO2) – oxidising, acute toxicity, hazardous to aquatic environment.

Contact with skin/eye, clothes

Skin: brush off excess. Wash off with plenty water.
Eye: flood with tap water (10min). See doctor.

Clothes: soak & rinse thoroughly.

1-aminobutane (CH3(CH2)3NH2) – flammable, harmful, corrosive. Open slowly (in case of pressure build-up).

Ignites when close to flame. Harmful in contact with skin/eye (severe burns). Respiratory irritation

Extinguish using fireblanket.

Benzenecarbaldehyde (C6H5CHO) - moderate health hazard.

Injested.
